Eureka: the flag for a nation!

This flag is the oldest flag in Australia that was designed and made by the people.
It had a poignant meeting to those citizens of 1854, and still has today to Australians who know of its meaning, and its history. It is a powerful symbol of freedom.

It is a flag that is suitable for a nation that is moving to becoming a republic. Some of its early supporters in 1854 were certainly republicans, but its early use was as the Australian flag, the ‘Southern Cross”, which unified the miners and gave a symbol to their purpose.

It is suitable because it is known, because it has a meaning, and because it embodies the ideas of democracy, justice, legality, a fair go and tolerance.
It is a flag that belongs to us all- that belongs to all Australians.

Some excellent comments on the flag and the need to change to the Eureka flag as a national symbol, are made by Duncan, Leigh, Madden and Tynan in “Imagining Australia - Ideas for our Future” (Allen & Unwin 2004)

This site is dedicated to establishing the Eureka flag as the National Flag. It is a not for profit site, with all surplus turned back to achieving the objective.
